Our goal is for students to eat balanced meals that consist of whole grains, lean and/or plant proteins, fruits, vegetables, and milk. Each lunch includes at least three of these items.

The sale of individual a la carte items such as Rice Krispy treats, cinnamon rolls, juice, does not convey the message of a balanced meal to our students. Further, these options were only available to students who had money to purchase them, creating a ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ between students.   In addition,  the sale of these food items will not only create longer lines, encourage the consumption of foods with minimal nutritional value and deviate from the nutritional goals of the department.

Education doesn’t stop once the lunch bell rings - thus we need to provide a menu that promotes not only good eating habits but is also in line with ensuring equity among our students.
