Independent Study Physical Education (ISPE) Application Information

The application process for Independent Study Physical Education for the 2019-2020 school year is closed.

ISPE applications will reopen Spring 2020 for the 2020-21 school year

SRVUSD offers flexible PE credits for Independent Study Physical Education for grades 6-12, Marching Band PE for grades 10-12 and Athletic PE for grades 10-12.

Independent Study PE

Independent Study in Physical Education (ISPE) is an option to complete physical education credits approved by the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. ISPE affords students the opportunity to extend physical education learning activities beyond the school campus and regular school hours. ISPE allows the student advanced study in activities not normally available in the District’s physical education program.  All students must work 1 on 1 with a certified coach and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Student is an exceptionally gifted athlete who is competing at the regional, state, or national competition level within the school year in an individual sport. No team sports are permitted.

  • Student has an impacted schedule due to a special academic support program.

  • Student wishes to take an advanced level  PE program that the school is not offering.

  • Student is medically prohibited from participating in regular P.E.  (This is different than students who need a medical waiver for a short period of time.  Students who take ISPE for medical reasons typically have chronic issues that will require them to enroll in ISPE the entire school year and not just for a portion of the school year).

List of acceptable ISPE activities

Dance (e.g. ballet, tap, swing, hip-hop), Golf, Gymnastics, Ice skating, Swim, Tennis, Aerial Dance, Archery, Bicycle (e.g. BMX, racing, jumping, mountain), Boating, Bob-sledding, Boxing , Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Equestrian, Fencing, Martial Arts, Skiing/Snowboarding, Surfing, Running, Race Walking & Cross Country, Triathlete Training

  • Students must apply to participate in ISPE. Applications will be available after Spring Break.

  • Students must meet for at least 400 minutes every 10 days with a certified coach that has liability insurance. The coach cannot be a parent.

  • Students will be responsible for setting goals with the coach, reflecting on these goals, and keeping a time log.  There will be an ISPE coordinator at each school who will review these documents.

  • Grades will be pass/fail.

  • Students in grade 7 or 9 who take ISPE are required to complete the Fitnessgram Tests in the spring (per Ed Code) at their school site.

  • ISPE counts as one of the courses in a student’s schedule. It must be either the first or last period of the day.  Students should not be on campus during this time due to lack of supervision for students in an unscheduled period.

  • A high school student choosing to participate in ISPE must choose a 6 or 7 period day.

  • A middle school student choosing to participate in ISPE must choose a 7 period day.

Marching Band

Students participating in Marching Band may earn 5 physical education credits each semester.  Students do not need to complete an application to receive the credit. Students should talk to their Marching Band teacher in the fall for more information.

Athletic Physical Education

Students participating in an East Bay Athletic League sport are eligible to to receive 10 credits of physical education for one season.  The process for applying and receiving credit is the same as before.  Students should check with their school’s Athletic Director for more information.

online physical education

Effective January 1, 2020, students may not begin a new online PE class to satisfy SRVUSD graduation requirements. Students already enrolled in an online PE class will be able to complete the course for graduation credits.  PE classes taken at community colleges will still be accepted.
