SRVUSD Newsletter 12.21.21
Posted 12/22/21

Dear SRVUSD Parents and Caregivers,

We have a few things to share with you before Winter break begins:

Board Brief

Highlights from the last Board meeting held on December 14, 2021, are now available online: 12-14-21 Board Brief.

District Technologies: Securly

SRVUSD must follow applicable laws to keep kids safe online and to teach students to utilize all technologies responsibly. Creating safe learning environments also helps SRVUSD maintain our commitment to educational excellence.

We were very pleased to be able to roll out our 1:1 device program during the first months of the pandemic to ensure accessibility to technology for all students. At the same time, we began using a piece of software called Securly to ensure continued compliance with applicable laws such as the Children’s Internet Protection Act. In addition to content filtering and website blocking, Securly also offers features for parents to become aware of what their child is doing on a District device.

As we continue to review and enhance these online student safety measures, we are appreciative of the feedback received from parents, caregivers and students. We will soon be turning off the parent summary feature for the time being (for those who opted in), and leaving in place the website content blocking feature. This will ensure our continued compliance with the law, and also allow us time to continue to evaluate the best systems to keep kids safe when using the internet. We will provide updates to the community as they become available.

If you ever need assistance with SRVUSD technologies please contact parentithelp@srvusd.net or call 925-824-1840, M-F  7:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. (excluding holidays).

Cyber Safety

Alongside our commitment to keep students safe online, we also want to promote opportunities for our parents and caregivers to also learn more about how to be partners in internet safety. The San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs will be sponsoring a virtual Cyber Safety event, tentatively scheduled for January 20th at 7:00 p.m. The presenter will be Darryl Holcombe, Senior Inspector with the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office. The event will cover important topics you need to know to support your students such as:

  • Protecting your identity

  • Online reputation and your digital footprint

  • Cyber-bullying

  • Sexting and sextortion

Stay tuned for more details to come soon!

Thank you as always for your partnership.
