Board of Education By-Trustee Area Elections
Posted 12/14/18

On Tuesday, December 18, 2018, the San Ramon Valley Unified School District Board of Education will hold the first in a series of public hearings to receive community feedback regarding the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) and the potential design of maps that outline trustee-areas for Board elections. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the SRVUSD Education Center at 699 Old Orchard Road, Danville.

Pursuant to Education Code section 35012, the San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s Board of Education is currently elected under an at-large election system, where trustees are elected by voters of the entire District.  Trustees are elected in even-numbered years and serve staggered, four-year terms, such that the next election for two trustee seats is scheduled for November 2020, with the remaining trustee seats scheduled for election in November 2022.

On December 11, 2018, the Board adopted Resolution #48-18/19, declaring its intent to transition from at-large to by-trustee area Board elections, where each Board member must reside within the designated trustee area boundary, and is elected only by the voters in that trustee area. Under the by-trustee area system, voters would only vote for one seat on the school board.

The District is working with National Demographics Corporation, demographics experts who will present information on the process and criteria for drawing the trustee-area boundary maps.  Following the presentation, the Board will hold the first of two statutorily required hearings to receive input from the community on the trustee-area map creation process, pursuant to Elections Code section 10010, subdivision (a)(1).

Information about this process will be posted on the District website. Questions can be directed to CVRA@srvusd.net
